In writing, the use of participle phrases can add variety and interest to your sentences.
Examples:

The doctor, hoping for the best, examined the x-rays.
Jogging every day, I soon increased my energy level.
Tired of studying, I took a short break.
Mary, amused by the joke, told it to a friend.
I opened my eyes wide, shocked by the red “F” on my paper.

Write and apply

1. Combine each pair of sentences below into one sentence by using an -ing participle and omitting repeated words. Use a comma or commas to set off the -ing participle phrase from the rest of the sentences.

Example:

(a) The boy sobbed bitterly.
(b) The boy ran toward me.

Combination:

Sobbing bitterly, the boy ran toward me.
or he boy, sobbing bitterly, ran toward me.
