Language Points

1.splash: sound, spot, mark made by hitting an amount of water
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He jumped into the swimming pool with a splash.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡There are some splashes of mud on your nylon stockings.

2. around the corner:very near
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She lives just around the corner.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡There¡¯s an accident around the corner.

3. sense: feel; be vaguely aware of; realize
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He sensed his proposals were unwelcome.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She sensed his anger although she was not looking at him.

4.hang up:1) finish a telephone conversation by putting back the receiver
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She was so angry that she hung up on him.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡After I finished my conversation I hung up.
2) place on a hook, peg or hanger
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡When the children come to school, they hang up their coats in the classroom.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Let¡¯s hang up the picture in the classroom.

5. horror: great shock or fear
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The crowd breathed in horror as the space craft exploded.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The captain realized to his horror that the Titanic was sinking rapidly.

6. back and forth: to and fro; backward and forward
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The animal kept running back and forth, trying to get out.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Someone was pacing back and forth behind the curtain.

7. grab: seize suddenly; take roughly and quickly
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡A mugger grabbed my handbag as I was walking across the park.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The man grabbed the boy¡¯s arm to stop him from running into the road.

8. paralyze: cause (some or all of the body muscles) to become uncontrollable or stiff
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He is paralyzed as the result of an assassin¡¯s bullet years ago.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡A stroke paralyzed half his face.

9. as a / the result of: because of; therefore
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Three people have already died as a result of the traffic accident.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He was late as the result of the heavy rain.

10. disability: lack of ability (to do something); being disabled
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Speaking only one language is considered a disability in international trade.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He has a disability which prevents him from walking.

11. adjust: make or become suited (to new conditions); adapt
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡You can¡¯t see through a telescope unless it is adjusted correctly to your sight.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He adjusted himself quickly to the heat of the country.

12.assistance: help; support
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡If you can¡¯t decide which shirt to buy, perhaps I could offer you assistance.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Could you give us some assistance with this work?

13. isolate: put or keep somebody / something entirely apart from other people or things
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Several villages have been isolated by the lack of buses.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He will be isolated until we know whether he has caught the disease.

14. rescue: (n.) an act of rescuing
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡There have been 3 rescues of climbers lost in the mountains this Christmas.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡A rescue team is trying to reach the trapped miners.
(v.) save (from harm or danger); set free
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He rescued his stamp collection from the burning house.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He was rescued from the sinking aircraft by a passing ship.

15. flip: turn
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He flipped to a fresh page and began to write.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She flipped the egg over in the pan.

16. tow: pull (something) along by a rope, chain, etc.
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡If you leave your car there, you might have it towed away by police.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The ship towed a damaged boat into port.

17. hold on to: not let go (of)
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The climber held on to the rock until the rescuers reached him.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Hold on to my hand tightly while crossing the street.

18. limp: lacking strength or stiffness
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡The heat was too much for her; she went limp and fell to the ground.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Her hand felt limp and damp.

19. grip: take a very tight hold (of)
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Anchors powerfully grip the seabed against the drift of the ship.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡I gripped the rope firmly and climbed onto the cliff.

20. pinch: take in a tight grip between the thumb and finger
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He pinched himself to make sure he wasn¡¯t dreaming.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She pinched Judy¡¯s cheek as she passed.

21. spit: force (liquid) from the mouth
Examples:
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡He was spitting out the husks of sunflower seeds on the floor.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡She spat out the food as though it was poison.
