Passage 3

Today airlines fly the Atlantic in a few hours. Planes are fast, safe and comfortable. The terrible storms, sudden fogs and cold of the ocean are no problem. Things were different in 1919. Planes were slow and not designed for such distances. The pilot sat with his head in the open. There were very few instruments to help him navigate. It was dangerous to fly in rain or darkness. Fog was the worst enemy of all. It seemed that those dangers were too great. In 1919 nobody had even tried to fly across the Atlantic non-stop.
