Key Word Reading
To find the main idea in a paragraph, you have to begin by recognizing key words in a sentence. Key words are the important or essential words — the words that determine the meaning of the sentence. Once you have developed the ability to identify key words in a sentence, you will find it easier to pick out the main idea in a paragraph. Also, learning to read key words will increase your reading speed. Key word reading is one of the methods you can resort to when skimming.
6. The following sentences are taken from Passage B. Read the sentences and underline their key words.

Example But she often warned three-year-old Todd not to go near the railroad tracks.

  1. Katie also heard the roar of a passenger express train as it rolled by.

2.What the little boys didn’t know was a second train was heading straight for them.

3 .Falzo knew right away that the train was going too fast to stop in time.

4.Frantically he waved and shouted at the kids, telling them to get off the tracks.
