Using Cue Words
Cue words are those in a reading passage that give clues to the meaning of some unfamiliar words and expressions. They can help you guess words and read more effectively. So learn to make use of cue words and don’t always consult a dictionary while reading. (You can keep a list of new words as you read and look them up later.)
6. Read the following sentences and try to guess the meanings of the italicized words. Underline the cue words and then write your definitions of the italicized words in either English or Chinese in the space provided.
Example :She hurried around the corner and saw to her horror — her17-month-old daughter, Kyla, floating face down in the 15×30-foot pool.
