Men do not cross the Arctic
Ocean very often. It is dangerous. It is dark
in winter and very cold. The ice is dangerous, too. In summer
the ice melts and moves quickly. In February 1968 Wally Herbert
started his journey across the Arctic. He went with three
men and some dogs. The men traveled slowly for five months.
In the summer the ice melted so they stopped their journey.
They stayed on pieces of ice. The ice floated in the water
and took them to the North. On April 6th 1969 they reached
the North Pole.
