  It was reported that the number of deaths caused by railways in one year was 4,712. That sounds like a good argument for staying off trains, perhaps for keeping to your cars instead. But when you look at the figure more closely, you learn that it means something quite different. Nearly half of the victims were people whose cars ran into trains at crossings. Only one hundred and thirty-two were passengers on trains.
