Stanford University

  Stanford University, offi cially Leland Stanford Junior University, is an independent, nondenominational institution of higher learning, in Stanford, California, U.S. It was founded in 1885 by the American statesman, railroad magnate, and patron of education, Leland Stanford, and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, in memory of their son, Leland Stanford Jr. The university opened in 1891. Instruction and research are based in seven schools: business, earth sciences, education, engineering, humanities and sciences, law, and medicine. Special facilities include the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution & Peace; the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve; and Hopkins Marine Station, in Pacifi c Grove, California.
