Used D.C. cop guns
linked to crimes
RELLEY, WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (AP) — More than 100 crimes,
including eight killings, have been linked to guns once used
by police in the nation’s capital, The Washington Post reported
Friday. Most of the guns — mainly Smith & Wesson revolver
— went into the market as part of two major trade-ins, in
1989 and 1994, for 9mm semiautomatic pistols.
The newspaper used the Freedom of Information Act to get the
serial numbers of the recycled police guns and then traced
them to 107 crimes through databases maintained by the Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
and the Virginia State Police.
